Manual Handling Training Options

Overview

ATA Training's range of Manual Handling courses are utilised across a wide spectrum of industry groups. Our practical based courses provided on or offsite will assist you to reduce your staff exposure to manual handling risks, whilst optimising manual handling safety and therefore staffs capacity.

Manual handling refers to any activity which requires a person to use force to lift, lower, push, pull, carry or otherwise move, hold or restrain objects (including people and animals).

Activities which involve manual handling may be identified whilst conducting workplace inspections or when reported by staff or students. Those jobs that involve tasks such as lifting and moving furniture, moving equipment, pushing loaded trolleys around campus and handling large books and files should be reviewed (by risk assessment) and action taken to minimise the risk and ensure staff and students are trained.

Guidelines

In order to reduce the risk of manual handling injuries in your work area, eliminate manual handling tasks by changing the equipment or materials in use.

If this is not possible, decrease the risk by:

  • changing the flow of jobs to minimise the amount of handling involved
  • altering the layout of work areas to avoid twisting, bending or excessive reach
  • reorganising storage areas so that heavier and frequently used items are stored between shoulder and knee height
  • using trolleys or other suitable equipment to move heavy or awkward items
  • maintaining and regularly checking all equipment used for manual handling tasks
  • providing information and training on safe work practices
